Recruitment Real Talk: Confidence, Friendships, and Success. By Lexi Lebo

Entering college can be a stressful, nerve wracking experience. Although there are many ways to get involved on campus and make new friends, Greek life tends to be the most popular. I remember texting my friends, family members, and roommates the week before recruitment started, asking “Does this dress look OK?”, “How should I do my hair?”, “What do I need to know?” Here’s what you need to know: just be yourself. As recruitment approaches and I am experiencing this process from the opposite end, I compiled a list of tips for any potential new members!

  1. How you present yourself is everything

  2. Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in! When you feel comfortable, you automatically present yourself more confidently. This is super important throughout the recruitment process. Make sure to have confidence in yourself and remember what recruitment is all about. You are going through this process hoping to find lifelong friends and to display your values in the community. Be proud and confident in your decision. Prioritize your personal values.

  3. It is important to remember your personal values and what friendship truly means to you. You must remember what values you are looking for in a friend, so you know who to surround yourself with in the future. Feel free to ask sorority members what they value in sisterhood to gain a better understanding on who you align with best!

  4. Ask questions and engage in conversations

  5. Recruitment can be overwhelming and it is totally normal to have questions! Now is the perfect time to ask them because you want to make sure you are finding your perfect match! Talk to as many members as you possibly can throughout this process, so you can get a better understanding of what the sorority is really like. It is irrational to judge an entire sorority based off of one conversation, so try your best to keep an open mind.

  6. Make time for yourself

  7. Make sure to stay organized with your schedule throughout the recruitment process. Things can get hectic very quickly, so it is vital to remain calm and set aside time to do things for yourself. Pack some good snacks in your bag, but make sure to eat substantial meals on your breaks! At the end of the day, try your best to relax and don’t allow recruitment to consume you. Whether this means reading a book, watching your favorite show, or hanging out with your best friends, it is important to make time for yourself.

  8. Savor every moment of recruitment

  9. Although recruitment can be intimidating, make sure to take it all in because it flies by. Recruitment is such a fun and fulfilling experience, so don’t forget to enjoy it! This is your college experience, make it the best one.
