As a current Bluestonian, I’ve always been fascinated by the alumni who helped build what we now have the privilege to carry forward. To me, they’re not just graduates with impressive titles or a LinkedIn profile on my feed, they're reminders of where passion and a love of PR can lead. Every alumna I’ve had the privilege of connecting with has been so kind and helpful to me. It is incredible to see their dedication to JMU and willingness to give back to our community even as busy and successful professionals in their own lives.
I believe that speaks to something deeper, rooted in JMU’s strong sense of community, especially within the School of Communication Studies. The relationships built among professors and students, both current and alum, have contributed to the sense of belonging that defines not only our firm but also the greater JMU experience. When I talk to alumni, I feel a sense of relief and reassurance. Their stories remind me that Bluestone isn’t just a line on a résumé, it’s a support system, a stepping stone and a community. Hearing about their favorite memories, the professors who left a lasting impression and how Bluestone played a role in their professional journeys brings the experience full circle.
For alumni looking to support current Bluestonians, know that even a small amount of guidance means so much. A 20-minute coffee chat, LinkedIn message, a forwarded job listing or even just a word of encouragement can go a long way. Your advice and friendliness helps to bridge the gap between classroom and career, and your support reminds us that we are part of something bigger. It makes me feel closer to Bluestone and JMU knowing I am supported by a group of successful alumni. These small acts of mentorship often have a lasting impact. Hearing how alumni have navigated their post-grad life makes the path ahead feel a little less daunting and a lot more achievable.
I hope in my post-grad life that I will keep up with my Bluestone connections, both with my fellow graduates as well as incoming Bluestonians. Offering career advice, college advice and even being a face that students can recognize and connect with is my goal. I’ll never forget my first interaction with a Bluestone alum, where the first thing I said to her was a nervously posed question, asking if my socks matched the shoes I was wearing. I immediately wished I had bit my tongue after asking the question, but she laughed and kindly gave me the advice that I needed as someone new to business professional dress, even giving me a few recommendations on where to shop. That kind of relationship is what I hope to continue for generations, as even small advice on matching shoes and socks makes such a difference.
Being part of this firm has shown me that public relations is about more than just managing perceptions, it’s about building relationships that last. And thanks to our alumni, I’m reminded every day that the work we do here matters, and that the impact we make now will one day shape the path for those who come after us.
