Resume vs. Cover Letter

Today's job market is harder than ever, and it is as important as ever to showcase your best self on job applications. Do you know the difference between a cover letter and a resume? A resume is a formatted list, with bullet points, including experience, skills, and education. A cover letter gives applicants the unique opportunity to write a personalized letter to the hiring team. On a cover letter, applicants should connect their experience and skillset to the job that's being applied for, this will let recruiters see why you are the right person for the job.

What to Include

Connection is key. Cover letters give recruiters the opportunity to learn why your prior experience connects to the role and makes you the best fit. Use the letter to brag about yourself, describe prior projects and campaigns, showcase your writing skills, or any experience you want to highlight that aligns well with the position being applied for. Be specific, share one or more campaigns from a course or internship you're proud of. Use that space to show you know what you’re talking about, discuss client presentations, pitches, or specific research methods, or any other important information that aligns with the job being applied for. Use the job description to help figure out what is important to include in your letter. A cover letter allows you to highlight why you would succeed at that company. A more personal introduction could help your chances of getting an interview. It is also vital to research the company or firm you are applying to. Use the letter to include what you know about their company and why you think you would fit in there, and what you could bring to their team. It’s important to include a proper header, a polite greeting, emphasize your experience, and lastly display your passion and excitement for that role. Make sure to keep your cover letter professional, cohesive, and an easy read for the hiring team.

Recommended or Required

Applicants should use the opportunity of writing a cover to stand out in a competitive job market. Go into detail on specific campaigns and client work. If there is a cover letter section, you should submit one. Writing a cover letter when it isn’t required or adding one if the application has a section for other documents demonstrates the applicant's eagerness and excitement about the role.
