Finding My Place
As a first-generation student concluding her senior year at James Madison University, I can confidently say that one of the most rewarding learning opportunities I’ve experienced has been joining Bluestone Communications - JMU's on-campus student-run public relations firm. Throughout this semester, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work hands-on with real local Harrisonburg clients. My team has had the opportunity to further foster our relationship with Red Root & Co., a client some of my teammates had worked with previously. What started as a class taken to fulfill a graduation cluster quickly became so much more. It turned into a genuine glimpse into what it’s like to immerse myself in the world of public relations, surrounding me with creativity, collaboration, and community.
Being a part of Team 4 has been one of my favorite aspects of Bluestone. If it weren’t for Bluestone, I don't know if I would have ever met my teammates - they’ve become not just my coworkers but also my close friends who constantly inspire me. I’ve learned so much from the way others approach media, and I’ve grown my skills by building on my team's ideas during brainstorming and media day sessions. Bluestone has opened my eyes to how something as small as being supported and encouraged is so special - especially when it is coming from people who share the same passion as you.
Gaining Real Experience
Through Bluestone Communications, I’ve gained hands-on experience working directly with local clients, which is something that can’t be replicated or learned from a class lecture. I’ve been able to contribute to client meetings, media day filming, brainstorming creative strategies, and contributing to real campaigns that make a positive impact within our Harrisonburg community. It's been rewarding to see my team's ideas come to life while knowing that our work is helping actual clients reach their goals and expand their audience.
One of my favorite experiences has been media days - getting behind the camera to create content for businesses, experimenting with product positioning, and later editing and polishing the final visuals. This process has pushed me to strengthen my existing skills in content creation while also expanding my creative perspective. Every shoot is different, every client has their own brand voice, identity, and mission. Every project offers a new challenge to grow from.
A Space to Grow
Bluestone has become more than just a class to me - it's become a space where I’ve been able to further my passions, learn new perspectives, and grow both personally and professionally. The environment in the ICE house embodies positivity, encouragement, and collaboration. I’ve learned that the best ideas don't happen in isolation - they stem from teamwork, constructive feedback, and open communication.
As I look back on my journey in Bluestone with the semester concluding, I’m so grateful for the people I’ve met, skills I’ve gained, and opportunities I’ve contributed towards in real-world projects. Bluestone has shown me what it means to work in Public Relations - not just through textbook readings or lectures, but through meaningful hands-on experiences.
Every “Duke” has their own journey at JMU, and mine has been shaped by Bluestone Communications. It’s taught me that when you surround yourself with supportive people and lean into creativity. The work you create can truly make an impact.
