Apartment Living 101: Top 5 Must-Have Items as a College Student

By: Alexa Maksym

As a college student, the day you move into your first apartment is an exciting milestone, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. From kitchen essentials to bedroom must-haves, there are many things to consider when moving into your new space. To navigate this process, I have provided the top 5 essentials a college student needs when moving into their first apartment.

  1. Air Fryer: An air fryer uses hot air to cook food, making it a healthier alternative to deep frying. It's easy to use, versatile, time-saving, and a quick clean up. An air fryer can be used to cook anything from cookies to chicken wings, and they can be as cheap as $25, perfect for a college student to purchase! I use my air fryer at least once daily and could not imagine my college apartment without it.

  2. Coffee Maker: For many college students, coffee is a daily necessity. Having a coffee maker in your apartment allows you to make your favorite brew whenever you need a pick-me-up, saving you time and money on trips to the coffee shop. A coffee maker is a practical and essential appliance for any apartment, providing convenience, cost savings, customization, and socializing opportunities.

  3. Mini Fridge: A mini fridge is my favorite product off this list. It is the best thing I have put in my room. A mini fridge is great for keeping snacks and drinks; I even keep my skincare products in it. You can place it in your room or kitchen, and it won't take up too much space. It's a convenient addition to any college apartment, especially if you share a kitchen with roommates.

  4. Mattress Pad: A mattress pad is an essential college item that can enhance the comfort of your bed, protect your mattress from spills and stains, and promote better hygiene by acting as a barrier against allergens. It can also help regulate your body temperature for a more comfortable sleep environment. Most of the time, the mattresses provided to you by your apartment complex are not comfortable, and being able to pick out the soft mattress pad of your choice is the best.

  5. Can Opener: When starting to cook in my apartment, I had no idea how many canned food items I would end up using. A can opener allows you to open canned goods easily, which are often affordable and convenient food options for college students. Without a can opener, you would be limited in the types of foods you can prepare, as many staples like beans, soups, and vegetables come in cans. Having a can opener on hand ensures that you can access these foods easily and quickly.

Moving into a college apartment, you will need tons of new and helpful items; these were just a few of the many that will be helpful to have!
