Welcome back Dukes! With the autumn season starting and schedules getting busy, everyone wants to start the semester off right. Whether you are a freshman or a senior, everyone is readjusting. Starting the season off right will be beneficial for every duke.Â
Academics
With classes beginning to ramp up, it is crucial to stay on top of assignments. Putting in the extra hours now will only benefit you later. If you need help, attend office hours or utilize on-campus learning centers for assistance. There are appointments available in the SSC. The writing center is run by other JMU students who are there to help their peers excel in writing for any class. The math and science learning center is also run by students and is available for students in classes of any level. If you need a quiet study space, find a list of designated areas on JMU’s website in the Student Gateway. You can reach out to your academic advisor for any class selection or credit inquiries.Â
Join an Organization
Follow your interests and get involved with organizations on JMUs campus. There are over 400 Student Organizations that cover everything from weightlifting to a cappella. There is a place for everyone on JMU’s campus. Organizations are also a great way to professionally network, gain work experience, complete service, and meet like-minded peers that may become lifelong friends. If you feel as though you do not have enough time for an organization, check BeInvolved to find events on campus without a semester-long commitment.

Take Care of Yourself
It is crucial to treat your body right in the upcoming months, prioritizing sleep, healthy eating, and daily exercise. Beyond the physical, isolate time for yourself to decompress from the stress of school; start a new hobby, try a yoga class at UREC, or explore local trails. If you are ever feeling extremely overwhelmed, reach out to the JMU Counseling Center; every JMU student has access to 8 free sessions.Â
Â
Establish a Schedule
Having a set schedule is a great way to stay on task and be the most productive with your time. I recommend creating a calendar with classes, meetings, extracurriculars, and assignments, ensuring you meet all dates and deadlines. It is vital to save time for basic functions, such as eating, sleeping, and exercising.Â

The most important thing to invest time in is yourself. This is your journey, so make sure you continue to enjoy it.
