Making the Most of JMU’s Professional Resources

By: Alexandra Candelier

Thinking about your career ahead can be a scary and intimidating feeling. Whether you’re a freshman with no idea what LinkedIn is or a senior who needs interview prep, JMU has an entire Career Center located in the Student Success Center dedicated to helping you achieve your professional goals.

Resume Assistance

The easiest way to begin your professional journey is to create a resume. No matter what major you are or what career field you want to go into post-grad, having a well-written resume can help you land internships, part-time jobs, shadowing opportunities, and much more. The Career Center can give you examples of resumes from each major, teach you how to write one, and meet with you to provide comments and advice on your current one!

Professional Attire and Image

The Career Closet is located on the 3rd floor of SSC and is your one-stop shop for getting your professional attire for interviews and headshots. They have suits, dress shirts, slacks, skirts, ties, and more. Students can choose up to five pieces each semester, free of charge, and can also donate their professional attire to the closet.

Interviewing

You may not know where to start when preparing for an interview, but the Career Center also provides information like common interview questions, the stages of an interview, interview attire, and much more. They also offer free practice interviews that you can sign up for virtually or in person at their career fairs and receive insightful feedback and advice on your interviewing skills.

The JMU Career Center has many more professional resources so be sure to visit them in SSC or follow them on Instagram for more information, events, services, and advice. It is never too early to start preparing!
