Activities in the Burg: 5 Fun Places To Go in Harrisonburg That Aren’t Billy Jacks or Magnolia’s

By: Reagan Young

Weekend activities in downtown Harrisonburg can start to feel repetitive, especially after spending four years as a JMU student. But entertaining visiting family or spending time with friends doesn’t have to mean just grabbing a meal downtown and taking a walk around campus. If you're looking for new ways to spice up your Saturday afternoons, here’s a list of five lesser-known activities and spots in and around Harrisonburg that you might not have considered yet:

Puppy City/Catnip Cafe

If you’re an animal lover, these two places offer a unique and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Even if you’re not looking for a new pet, you can still enjoy a 30-minute play session with a puppy or a group of playful kittens. This activity is perfect for college students, especially during stressful times like midterms and finals, as it can be surprisingly therapeutic. At Puppy City, located near Valley Mall on East Market Street, you can spend half an hour playing with the puppy (or puppies) of your choice, completely free of charge. Meanwhile, at Cat’s Cradle in downtown Harrisonburg, you can enjoy 30 minutes with a room full of kittens for $20 and indulge in their full coffee bar. If you're looking to unwind and de-stress while spending time with some adorable animals, these experiences offer the perfect escape from the daily grind.

A Day in Staunton

Just a short 30-minute drive from the Friendly City, Staunton is a charming and peaceful town ideal for a relaxing day trip. Especially picturesque during the fall foliage and holiday seasons, Staunton offers a variety of attractions, from browsing the unique boutiques along Main Street to exploring its historic museums or catching a play at a replica of Shakespeare's indoor theater. The town also offers a vibrant food scene and hosts a range of fun community events. Whether you're seeking a change of scenery or looking to try something new, Staunton is the perfect destination for a wholesome getaway.

Farmers Market

If you haven't yet experienced it, the Harrisonburg Farmers Market on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. is a must-visit. This season, don't miss the special holiday-themed markets happening on the first three Saturdays in December! The market features a delightful mix of handmade crafts, fresh produce, and beautiful flowers from local vendors. With its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, the Harrisonburg Farmers Market is the perfect spot to gather with friends and make sustainable purchases while enjoying a charming Saturday morning outing.

Thrifting/Consignment shopping

Staying on the theme of sustainability, Harrisonburg has many second-hand shopping opportunities to offer. Stores like Dart Resale and Trade, Gift and Thrift, the Mercy House, and Heartworn Vintage in the Shops at Agora (just to name a few) are all great options to spend some time just browsing or perhaps building your dream wardrobe. Whether you're hunting for vintage clothing, gently used furniture, or quirky home decor, these local second-hand shops offer something for everyone. Not only do you get the satisfaction of supporting charitable causes and reducing waste, but you also get the thrill of discovering hidden treasures that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s a win-win for your wardrobe, your home, and the planet!

White Oak Lavender Farm

Lastly, if you’d like a change of scenery from the Burg but don’t want to travel the full hour round-trip to Staunton, White Oak might just be the perfect place. Only 15 minutes outside of Harrisonburg, White Oak Lavender Farm offers wine tastings, interactive lavender gardens, and a lavender aroma shop. They also offer classes like wreath and wand making, craft series, and “sip and spa nights.” This relaxing retreat will provide a peaceful escape without venturing too far from home. Whether you're strolling through the fragrant lavender fields, enjoying a glass of local wine, or getting creative with a hands-on craft, White Oak Lavender Farm offers a tranquil and rejuvenating experience. It's the perfect spot to unwind, recharge, and enjoy a bit of nature all just a short drive away from Harrisonburg.
