Through the Ages: Halloween By: Mina Hakimpour

Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means…what are you going to wear? While Halloween may not be a big deal to some, for most, it’s the holiday of the year. Whether it be a cat, ghost, or witch, everyone wants to look their best. Need some inspiration? Look no further! I’m here to tell you about the most popular costumes across the last few years and my prediction for 2023.

2013

2013 was the year of the 2 Ms, Miley and Minions. With Despicable Me 2 coming out that year and Miley Cyrus coming in like a wrecking ball during the VMA’s, safe to say they were some of the biggest pop culture moments of 2013.

2016

Fast forward a few years and a new couple's costume has taken the world by storm. With the release of the hit movie, Suicide Squad, couples were crawling across the globe in their renditions of Harley Quinn and The Joker. However, another costume sat high on the Halloween pedestal, a beloved anti-hero. Deadpool was released earlier in 2016 and because of the film’s witty, dark humor mixed with Ryan Reynolds’ charm and off the cusp improvisation, Deadpool was another fan favorite.

2017

Move aside Joker! There’s a new clown in town. That’s right, our balloon loving friend, Pennywise, is making his Halloween debut. 2017 was the year that the new It, a rendition of the old classic from 1990, premiered. Pennywise was back and better than ever. Many went as either Georgie or Pennywise, or even as a duo of the two. Do you want to float too?

2021

2021 was all about TV and movies. With quarantine slowly coming to an end, all of the characters we binged watched have become inspiration for Halloween. A popular choice being Cruella DeVille, who was the star in Disney’s newest live action adaptation. The other being characters from Squid Game, a Korean Netflix show that took over our screens during quarantine. 2021 was all fashion forward and tracksuit chic.

2022

Witches are back! With the release of Hocus Pocus 2, witches are making a comeback. While the costume has been a classic for years, the release of the film created a sense of nostalgia for everyone who watched the film growing up. The most popular rendition being Riverdale stars  Lili Reinhart, Madelaine Petsch and Camila Mendes dressing up as the iconic Sanderson Sisters.

Now, what about 2023?

Blonde icons are taking over. With the immense success that Barbie and Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has brought into 2023, there is no doubt that they will be taking over Halloween. Whether that be Barbie and Ken alongside Taylor Swift and new beau Travis Kelce, blonde is the new purple and orange this Halloween. And there’s so many eras and Barbies to choose from!

So…what are you wearing this year?
