JMU students are so lucky to have amazing food in Harrisonburg. As a graduating senior, I’ve tried to go to as many food spots as I could over the last four years, but I feel like I’ve still missed out on so many. Here are some of my final foodie destinations for my last few weeks in the Burg:
1. Magpie Diner (magpiediner.com): I just recently discovered why Magpie is on everyone’s Instagram stories over the weekend - their brunch is AMAZING! With a rotating weekend menu, you’re able to try something different every time you visit, without the worry of whether if it will taste good (I promise, it will). Their modern take on classic diner food is very appealing to all foodies - vegan and vegetarian options are available - so this is a MUST on my foodie bucket list. They do have limited seating given how popular they are, so make sure you arrive early to avoid the wait!
2. Billy Jack’s Shack (https://www.billyjacksshack.com/locations/harrisonburg-va/#menu): This is probably very basic of me, and I have been to Billy Jack’s at least 25 times since coming to JMU, but I can’t get enough of their food. Ever had a burger with mac & cheese on it? The Greg Brady is seriously the best slider you could ever order. I always pair mine with the 50/50 Grind and fries for a perfect-sized meal. If you like beer, they also have a rotating tap with local craft selections to give you a taste of the Shenandoah Valley. Billy Jack’s will always have a special place in my college foodie experience, and I highly recommend it if you haven’t been!
3. Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza (http://www.bellalunawoodfired.com): I am a huge Italian food fanatic after growing up in Italy, and Bella Luna gives me nostalgia in every bite. Their pizzas are phenomenal - I love their classic Margherita, but some of my other favorites are The Don, Prosciutto & Arugula, and Bella Bianca. Aside from the pizza, their Pasta Bolognese is probably my favorite item on the menu, but I’ve been dying to try the Wood-Fired Mac & Cheese. If you somehow save room for dessert, they also have Bella Gelato across the street with a variety of Italian dessert options. Take my word and go to Bella Luna for dinner, you won’t regret it!
I could go on and on about other fantastic restaurants in the area, but these three are too good to not share. Lastly, there’s a few spots that I haven’t been to yet but would love to try: Urgie’s Cheesesteaks, brunch at The Golden Pony, The Little Grill Collective, Cuban Burger and Rocktown Kitchen.
I don’t know about you, but I have worked up an appetite after all this food talk - let me know if there’s another spot that I should add to my list!
