Starting college can be an overwhelming experience. With countless doors of opportunity in front of you, it's challenging to decide which path to choose. Whether it's picking your major, joining clubs and organizations, or making new friends, the possibilities seem endless. The fear of making the wrong choices can be paralyzing, but what if I told you that saying "yes" could change your life for the better?
When I first arrived at college, I was hesitant to step out of my comfort zone. I was a "no" person; always avoiding the unknown. I wanted to play it safe and stick to what I knew. However, my college experience took an unexpected turn when I had an outgoing roommate during my freshman year who encouraged me to say "yes" to new experiences. My roommate's enthusiasm for trying new things led us to sorority recruitment in the fall, and that was just the beginning of how saying "yes" to opportunities transformed my college journey.
The next thing I knew, I was having to make yet another important decision: where to live the next year. At this point, it was only my second month at school, and I still had no idea what I was even doing, but I took a chance and decided to say yes to living in the sorority house, which also led to an opportunity to become the House Manager. Saying yes to that was one of the best decisions I had made, and I didn’t even know it yet.
Through that experience, I met the most amazing people who are now my roommates, and being the House Manager was a fulfilling learning experience. And soon after that, another opportunity presented itself which led to my position now as the Housing Assistant. These positions not only provided me with valuable experiences but also allowed me to step into my potential. With the confidence I had grown in myself, I felt prepared for the next step in my journey: a position at Bluestone Communications. While saying "yes" doesn't always lead you exactly where you expect, it's all part of the learning experience, and college is the ideal place to experiment with different opportunities.
The point of taking you through my college journey is to show you that you never know where one opportunity might lead you. So, my biggest piece of advice is to broaden your horizons. Saying "yes" can give you a home away from home, help you define your academic and career goals, and provide you with new enriching experiences. It's through saying "yes" that you will meet people you may have never crossed paths with otherwise. So, if you're starting college, I encourage you to take advantage of the endless doors presented to you. They may just lead you exactly where you're supposed to go. Embrace the unknown, and let the power of "yes" transform your college experience.
