I like to look at the future as something good: something bright, shiny, and full of many new experiences. Yes, bad things will happen. It’s inevitable. But you know what they say, you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain. So yeah, I like to think about the exciting future ahead of me. I guess you could say I’m a “glass half-full” kind of gal, or whatever.
One of the next stops in my life that I am rapidly approaching is graduate school. I am thrilled for this experience: I love school and I am eager to begin an academic career of even higher learning. Currently I am a double major student studying Communications and Interactive Design, and I want to continue my academic career by earning a Master’s Degree in Interactive Design.
In the coming months, I will be finalizing my portfolio and applying to universities. So far, I will be applying to three: Elon University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University. With all the excitement this application process brings, it also brings much uncertainty. So, I thought I would write a note to my future self, hopefully calming those anxious thoughts. Here goes nothing!
What’s up! How ya been? I hope you’re doing well. Is your hair still bleach blonde? I sure hope so. I can’t believe it’s the summer of 2021. You graduated college!!! Stop crying. Everything is going to be fine. You know why? Because you got into GRAD SCHOOL!
Wow, you really did it. You’re going to (insert future North Carolina school here) this fall! I am so incredibly proud of you. At that university, you’re going to do amazing things. I can’t wait to see what you accomplish there.
I feel like I know you pretty well, so I’m going to give you some advice for the bright future ahead of you. First, don’t underestimate yourself, and give yourself enough credit. You stink at those, sometimes. You are talented, smart, and driven, so make sure you applaud yourself often, ok? Good. Second, make a million connections. You’re really building your brand now, so meet people and network a lot: you never know who’s going to be the one to change your life! And lastly, enjoy yourself as much as you can. This is going to be such an amazing adventure for you, and you are going to learn a ton: about yourself, about others, and about the world around you. Take it all in, savor it, and make some great memories.
You got this, girl! Go kick butt out there.
P.S. Remember when that whole COVID thing happened last year? Phew, I’m glad that’s over!!”
